Here’s our battered copy of last week’s NME…
It’s been passed around the punters on three Rock’n’Roll London Walks now, and has been the cause of much heated debate.
We LOVE these lists just for that very reason.
Here are a few comments from London Walkers…
Chas from Texas simply stated:
“It’s Revolver. There’s no debate.”
Fair enough, Chas.
A walker from Liverpool, however, was more forgiving:
“It’s interesting that it’s not Revolver or Sgt Pepper or Pet Sounds or What’s Going On? at No.1. That marks some kind of sea change.”
Good point, this. In terms of these lists, we’ve lived in the shadow of those four records for decades. Are we moving into a new era?
Another London Walker – from New Jersey – was having none of it:
“It should be The Stones.”
“Which album?” I asked.
“Don’t care,” he grinned with a challenging look in his eye. “Any one of ‘em is better than The Smiths.”
That’s fighting talk. And that’s what we love about the Rock’n’Roll London Walk: the walkers are such passionate fans of The Music.
Here’s the Top Ten, as listed by NME…
1. The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead
2. The Beatles – Revolver
3. David Bowie – Hunky Dory
4. The Strokes – Is This It
5. The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground & Nico
6. Pulp – Different Class
7. The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
8. Pixies – Doolittle
9. The Beatles – The Beatles
10. Oasis – Definitely Maybe
